Final Project

So for about maybe a year or so, I've been working (time allowing) on my own pet project for a comic that's been in my head for maybe 4-5 years now, but only has rough work on paper until said last year. There's been a lot of thought put into it so far, and I think that I am going to actually use this final project as an opportunity to finally get a handle on how I can pull it out of the rough draft area and actually do a page for once. To that end, I'm going to actually produce a page of this comic, doing all of the hard copy work by hand based on scripts and rough sketches, while using all of the Photoshop tricks and tutorials I've learned over the past few weeks that make me think I can actually pull this off now (honestly I felt like I was dead in the water until I saw some of the tutorials this past week). So more or less, if I'm doing this, I need the go ahead now, because my time to work on this will be limited over the weekend, I've already started, and I don't want to go to square one come Monday.

While I'm not going into detail on the plot, I'll go ahead and say its a post apocalyptic tragedy about people struggling to survive in a doomed, war ridden world, lamenting mankind's past futile attempts to control their own nature through law and technology, and a faux government's attempts to dominate others by scraping together whatever "glory" they can find from the dead empire that led their world to ruin.

(I did a lot of digging. This isn't even half of it, but most of my sketches are rather unintelligible)

  1. Cool idea man, comic books are rather amazing to look at knowing the amount of work required for each page. I think that your style of drawing would be quite interesting to see in that heavy colorized environment that is a comic. Is there going to be a main character and is this going to be a one page story or just an excerpt from a larger total product?

    1. I'm still working out which scene/panel I'm going to display. This thing is a really big personal project already in the making, so it's just going to be an excerpt.

  2. Cool stuff, man. You have a very stylistic way about approaching the concept. I can vouch for some of your work! I think it looks way better in person. Cant wait to see what these look like once they're scanned in.

  3. This is a really intense project! I love the idea of it, and can't wait to see some of the images scanned in and pulled together as one story. Try not to lose that expressive mark making in your drawings when you make them digital!

  5. Ahhh I love graphic novels. Reading over your concept made me think of the movie/ manga Akira haha. But anyway, if I were you, I would chose something that happens in the story that I am really excited about and can't wait to get on paper. Like an intense fight scene or something of the sort. I think that will allow you to make the most of photoshop.

I think something interesting like that would allow you to make the most of your photoshop skills.

  7. Love the concept and I agree with the comment above me. Also break out of the traditional layout of the comic book strip. break out of the rectangular confines and explore the page in a creative way.

  8. I agree with Haley, I would break out of traditional comic book strip layout to make it more interesting. I honestly don't know a lot about comic books so I don't really know what to comment on. I guess my only question is on how you would present it (on what medium). Would you do multiple pages, one large piece of sheet paper, canvas, ect.?

  9. I wonder if there is a way you can your style of illustration when you take it digital. I think that would would be awesome. I agree with Haley as well, if you feel like your current photoshop will allow you too, I would breaking all the boundaries and be as original as possible, if that's really even possible. I think you should stick to your aesthetic and definitely right now is a time to let those ideas out. I think this final project will give you the true confidence you need in your story. Nice

  12. Hi Russ

Woah, this is some heavy stuff. Seems much sketchier than Akira's style. Wonder what it would look like if some of the figures were separated from photos instead/in addition to your sketches. Or that the final version looks like a rough sketch on purpose. I like the chaotic feel of Akira's graphics and how he fills the page but still has a hierarchy.
